Kanaka Maoli people have made clear their desire for increased self-determination, that is increased Kanaka Maoli control over their lands, resources and affairs. Govenor Ige and his administration continually demonstrate that they do not have the best interests on the cultural integrity of Mauna Kea and our ‘aina. HCR37 attempts to ‘clear the way’ for construction of the TMT on our sacred Mauna. The measure creates a bogus, state sponsored and initiated “reconciliation” process. HCR37 initiates a state created process for reconciliation between the Kanaka Maoli people and State of Hawaii by establishing of so-called “Blue Ribbon Reconciliation Commission.” All members to this commission will be appointed by Governor Ige. This measure is disingenuous. Any true process of reconciliation should start with an apology by the Governor and his administration to the Mauna Kea Kia`i and the larger Hawaiian community.
